ST-29 Egghead is a yellow Trigger deck. Its Leader, Monkey.D.Luffy (ST29-001), has 5000 power and 6 Life, one more than most Leaders. Its effect is small: when it attacks and you have 2 or less Life cards, you draw 1 card and trash 1. The extra Life card and the deck's [Trigger] effects carry most of the weight.

Most of the deck's 17 different cards share the Egghead and Straw Hat Crew types. Jinbe, Nami and Nico Robin all play themselves for free from a Trigger if your Leader is Monkey.D.Luffy, and Kaku, Rob Lucci and Iai Death Lion Song add removal that gets better as the Life totals drop. Roronoa Zoro (ST29-014) is the deck's top end: an 8000-power Character with [Rush: Character] that can trash a Trigger card from your hand to draw.

It suits a player who likes defensive, value-driven games and doesn't mind taking hits on purpose. It is also a good first look at how yellow works in the One Piece Card Game, since almost every yellow deck is built around Life cards and Triggers.

Every card in ST-29 carries a current block icon, so the deck is legal in Standard as sold.

Ratings

Strength as sold 3/5

Six Life and a deck full of Triggers give it a clear, playable plan, but the Leader's only effect does nothing until you are down to 2 Life, and several Characters, like Stussy and Franky, have no text at all.

Upgraded ceiling 4/5

The Leader has the Egghead type, which turns on a deep yellow pool of Egghead Triggers such as S-Bear, Sentomaru and OP09-105 Sanji, so a few cheap swaps make most of your Life cards do something when they flip.

Difficulty to play 3/5

You decide every turn how much damage to take, when to hold Iai Death Lion Song for its K.O. clause, and which Trigger cards to keep or trash to Roronoa Zoro, so Life management is the whole game.

How it plays

The early turns are about building a board without overcommitting. Brook and Nico Robin are [Blocker]s, Sanji (ST29-004) finds another Straw Hat Crew card off the top 4, and Usopp rests an opponent's Character with a cost up to your opponent's Life count. You can afford to let a few early attacks through, because each Life card you lose goes to your hand and may hit a Trigger.

The middle of the game is where ST-29 turns around. Once you are at 2 or less Life, every Leader attack draws and trashes, Iai Death Lion Song adds a K.O. on cards with a cost of 3 or less, and the free Triggers from Jinbe, Nami and Robin start putting bodies on the board on your opponent's turn. Nami (ST29-008) also lets an Egghead Character survive a K.O. effect by turning a Life card face-up.

You close with large attackers. Roronoa Zoro hits for 8000 the turn it lands, Stussy and Franky are big bodies, and Kizaru!! Compared to Two Years Ago We're a Hundred Times Stronger Now!! gives your Luffy Leader [Unblockable] for the last swing.

Tips for your first games

  • Don't spend counters to protect Life early in the game. With 6 Life, taking the first two or three hits is often better than losing cards from hand.
  • Hold Iai Death Lion Song until you are at 2 or less Life, so its +4000 also K.O.s a Character with a cost of 3 or less.
  • Raw Heat Strike only adds its −2000 at 1 or less Life, so it is a weaker counter early and a strong one late.
  • Use Roronoa Zoro's ability to trash Trigger cards you can't use this turn, like a second Raw Heat Strike, to dig for the cards you need.
  • Usopp's rest effect scales with your opponent's Life, not yours, so play it early when your opponent still has 4 or 5 Life cards.

Upgrade guide

Every upgrade below is legal in Standard and shares a color with the Leader. Prices are each card's base printing on TCGplayer on October 10, 2026; open a card for today's price.

Budget Egghead Triggers

The fastest improvement is to replace the blank Characters with Egghead cards whose Triggers do something. Your Leader has the Egghead type, so cards that check for it all work. S-Bear and Sentomaru remove small Characters when they flip, S-Snake stops an attacker, and OP07-109 Monkey.D.Luffy K.O.s a cost 4 or less Character from Life or from the field. Every card here is budget-priced, and the cost to the deck is a little raw power at 5 and 6 cost.

Monkey.D.Luffy OP07-109$0.87
Sentomaru OP12-104$0.33
S-Bear OP08-113$0.52
S-Snake OP08-112$0.48
Franky OP07-107$0.32

Searchers and card flow

ST-29 has only one real searcher, Sanji. Adding two Liliths, a low-Life Sanji and Nami gives the deck more ways to find Triggers and removal, and it makes the Leader's late-game draw less important. These are mostly cheap; OP08-106 Nami costs a bit more but adds a K.O. on cost 5 or less. Expect to cut Brook and one copy of the 6-cost Characters.

Low-Life finishers

This idea raises the deck's top end for the turns after your Life runs low. The 10-cost Monkey.D.Luffy gets cheaper at 1 or less Life and gives your Leader +2000 through your opponent's turn, Jewelry Bonney (OP13-108) gains [Rush] with an Egghead Leader and takes a Life card when it lands, and OP09-105 Sanji puts a card back into your Life from a Trigger. Luffy and Sanji are the more expensive cards in this guide; Bonney and Gum-Gum Dawn Stamp are budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ST-29 good?

ST-29 is a solid starter deck with a clear plan: take damage, hit Triggers and win late. TurnZero HQ rates it 3 out of 5 as sold and 4 out of 5 with Egghead Trigger upgrades, because the Leader's own effect is small.

Is ST-29 legal in Standard?

Yes. Every card in ST-29 is legal in Standard, including the Monkey.D.Luffy Leader (ST29-001).

What should I upgrade first in ST-29?

Replace Stussy, Franky (ST29-010) and Brook with Egghead Characters that have useful Triggers, such as S-Bear, Sentomaru and OP07-109 Monkey.D.Luffy. They are budget cards and they make more of your Life cards count.

Is ST-29 good for beginners?

It is a good deck for learning how Life and Triggers work, and its cards are easy to read. The harder part is judging when to take damage and when to counter, which comes with practice.
