ST-34 PURPLE Charlotte Katakuri

Katakuri spends DON!! to look at the top card of your opponent's deck, and the rest of the box rewards knowing it. Here is how to play the deck and what to add.

ST-34 is a mono-purple Big Mom Pirates deck led by Charlotte Katakuri. Once per turn, when the Leader attacks or is attacked, you may return one DON!! card to your DON!! deck (DON!! −1) to look at the top card of your opponent's deck and give the Leader +1000 power for that battle.

That peek matters because several cards in the box ask you to choose a cost and reveal the top card of your opponent's deck. If the costs match, you get the effect. Charlotte Oven K.O.s a Character with base cost 3 or less, Charlotte Perospero draws a card and adds an active DON!!, Cognac Mama-Mash K.O.s a Character with base cost 8 or less, and When Two Men Are Fighting the Last Thing I Need Is Some Half-Hearted Assistance!!!! gives +5000 as a counter. With the Leader's look first, you know the right answer.

The rest of the deck refills DON!! as you spend it: the Charlotte Katakuri Character adds two DON!! when one returns on your turn, and Charlotte Cracker and Charlotte Pudding add one. It suits a player who enjoys planning a turn in order and keeping track of hidden information.

Every card in ST-34 is legal in Standard, including the OP11 and EB03 reprints and the P-090 Charlotte Smoothie promo.

Ratings

Strength as sold 3/5

The Leader's peek turns the box's guess-a-cost cards, Charlotte Oven, Charlotte Perospero, Cognac Mama-Mash and the +5000 counter event, into sure things. The deck spends DON!! quickly, though, and the box has only a few cards that put it back.

Upgraded ceiling 4/5

Standard has more Big Mom Pirates cards that refund returned DON!!, such as the OP08 and EB03 Pudding and Brulee, plus searchers and Conquest of the Sea, which make the plan more consistent.

Difficulty to play 4/5

You track the DON!! you return, remember the cost of the card you looked at, and order your actions so the guess happens after the peek. That is a lot to manage for a starter.

How it plays

Early, play Charlotte Brulee to find a Big Mom Pirates card, and Charlotte Cracker or Charlotte Pudding to add DON!!. Pudding only adds DON!! when you have as many or fewer on your field than your opponent, which is usually true when you go second.

In the middle turns, attack with the Leader first and pay DON!! −1 to see your opponent's top card. Then, in the same Main Phase, use Charlotte Oven or Charlotte Perospero and name that cost; the top card has not changed, so the reveal matches. With the Charlotte Katakuri Character on the field, that DON!! −1 adds two rested DON!! back, so the peek also grows your DON!!.

Late, Cognac Mama-Mash removes a large Character once you know the cost, and Charlotte Linlin spends four DON!! and a card from hand to add a Life card and drop an opposing Character's base power to 0. Charlotte Smoothie punishes removal on your opponent's turn by playing another Big Mom Pirates Character from hand.

Tips for your first games

  • Attack with the Leader before you activate Charlotte Oven or Charlotte Perospero, so the Leader's peek tells you which cost to name.
  • On your opponent's turn, use the Leader's peek before you counter, then name the cost you saw with the +5000 counter event.
  • Play the Charlotte Katakuri Character before your DON!! −1 effects on your turn, since its refund only works while it is on the field.
  • Charlotte Anana only gains Blocker when you control another purple Big Mom Pirates Character, so play it after one.

Budget: refund the DON!! the Leader spends

The Leader spends a DON!! every time it peeks, and the box has only a few ways to get it back. These cheap Big Mom Pirates Characters fix that. Charlotte Pudding refunds one on your turn and the EB03 Charlotte Brulee refunds one on your opponent's turn when your own effect returned it, which covers the Leader's defensive peek. They replace weak bodies like Charlotte Flampe and Charlotte Anana.

Charlotte Perospero OP08-068$0.37

More guessing and DON!! −1 removal

More cards that check your opponent's top card or spend DON!! for removal give the Leader's peek more to do. Streusen rests a Character on a correct guess, the OP08 Charlotte Oven K.O.s on attack, and Conquest of the Sea removes two Characters for DON!! −2. These cost you DON!!, so add them alongside the refund cards above.

Charlotte Oven OP08-061$0.60
Conquest of the Sea OP08-077$0.46

Search and a stronger top end

For a more consistent deck, add searchers and stronger late plays. The OP11 Charlotte Pudding finds a Big Mom Pirates card and can peek at the top card on its own, and We're Going to Claim the One Piece!!! searches five cards. The OP11 Charlotte Katakuri readies two Characters each turn, Sanji & Pudding draws and adds an active DON!!, and the OP08 Charlotte Linlin adds a Life card and moves an opposing Character into their Life. This is the most expensive path.

Charlotte Pudding OP11-070$2.84

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ST-34 good?

ST-34 is playable and has a clear plan: peek with the Leader, then win the cost guesses on Charlotte Oven, Charlotte Perospero and Cognac Mama-Mash. It runs short of DON!! without upgrades that refund it.

Is ST-34 legal in Standard?

Yes. Every card in ST-34, including the OP11-062 Charlotte Katakuri Leader, is legal in Standard.

What should I upgrade first in ST-34?

Start with cheap DON!! refunds such as the OP08-067 Charlotte Pudding and the EB03-033 Charlotte Brulee, cutting Charlotte Flampe and Charlotte Anana.

Is ST-34 good for beginners?

It is one of the harder starters. You need to track DON!! returns and remember the card you looked at, so it suits a player who already knows the basic turn structure.
