How it plays out of the box

This deck builds a board of Madrigals, parks one at Casa Madrigal for a lore each turn, and uses Mirabel to make the rest quest for more. Julieta and the songs keep cards flowing, so it rarely runs out of things to do.

It's straightforward and hard to knock over, but it has little removal. A deck with one large threat can sit behind it while the Madrigals quest for 1 or 2 each.

The rating: power 3, difficulty 2

Power
Difficulty

Steady card flow and an easy plan, held back by a lack of removal.

Both numbers are TurnZero HQ's own editorial read, not an official Ravensburger rating. Power compares the deck out of the box against the other starter decks, not against a tuned tournament list. Difficulty is how much the deck asks of the person playing it.

What to cut first

Cut non-Madrigal characters that don't heal or draw, and any song you can't sing for free with the characters in the deck.

A Lorcana deck needs at least 60 cards, no more than 4 copies of a card with the same full name, and at most two inks, so every card you add means one you take out. The deck building rules →

Upgrade direction 1: More Madrigals

The family got new cards after Ursula's Return, and several are Core-legal reprints. Keep the deck's identity and upgrade its pieces.

Upgrade direction 2: Songs and singers

Amber and Amethyst songs got much better in later sets, and the Reign of Jafar starter is built around them. Free songs that draw cards fix this deck's tendency to run out of gas in long games.

Core or Infinity

As of October 2026, this deck is not legal in Core Constructed as sold, because Core uses sets 9 (Fabled) onward. A card counts as Core-legal when any printing with its full name is, so the cards from this box that were reprinted in Fabled or later can still be played there. The whole deck is legal in Infinity Constructed, which allows every set, and at any kitchen table.

Every upgrade pick on this page is from set 9 or later, so all of them are Core-legal. Core Constructed vs. Infinity →

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Encanto starter deck good?

It's one of the friendlier starters: easy to play, durable, and full of card draw. It needs removal to compete with stronger decks.

Can I play a Madrigal deck in Core?

Yes, with newer printings. Casa Madrigal, Julieta, Look at This Family and Ariel - Singing Mermaid were all reprinted in Fabled, which is Core-legal.
