One Piece Card Game
Your Leader decides your colors, how much Life you start with, and what your deck is trying to do. This guide covers how Leaders work, the ones that bend the rules, how to pick one, and which Leader printings collectors pay the most for.
A Leader is the one card your deck is built around. A legal deck is one Leader, a 50-card main deck and a 10-card DON!! deck. The Leader starts the game face up in your Leader area, and it does three jobs at once:
There are more than 140 Leaders, and each one plays differently. That is why the same 50 cards can be a strong deck under one Leader and unplayable under another.
A Leader has no cost. Instead it shows power, Life, its color or colors, an attribute and its types. Among the 146 Leaders with a standard printing in TCGplayer's catalog, 138 have 5000 power, so the numbers that really differ are Life and the effect.
Life is a starting count, not a hit-point total. More Life means more hits before you are in danger, and a Life card you lose normally goes to your hand, so a Leader with less Life also gets fewer extra cards over a game. How to read a One Piece card covers every field.
Some Leaders rewrite deckbuilding or the win condition, which makes them the first thing to check before you build. These are examples from the current card pool:
Bandai bans a card when it hurts the variety of decks people can enjoy, judging by win rates, tournament results, usage and whether it pushes other Leaders out. Three Leaders are banned on the list effective October 12, 2026:
A banned Leader is still a collectible. The Alternate Art Nami (OP03-040) sells for $254.94 on October 2, 2026, years after the ban. Best One Piece cards covers the rest of the ban list and what it says about card strength.
For a first deck, choose a Leader that comes in a starter deck. The deck around it is already built, and you can improve it one card at a time. Bandai's 2026 starter decks, released July 31, each come with one Leader:
After that, pick for what you enjoy playing. A Leader's effect tells you the plan, such as rewarding a deck full of one type, or giving you more DON!! cards, so read it first and build toward it. Choosing a character you like is a good reason too: you will play the deck more. How to build a One Piece deck walks through the rest, and players' published decks are on TurnZero HQ's One Piece decks page.
A Leader's standard printing is cheap: the median standard Leader from a main booster set sold for $0.19 on October 2, 2026. Collectors pay for the alternate printings. TCGplayer lists 85 Alternate Art Leaders, 39 Parallels and 26 SP Leaders, all from EB02 Anime 25th Collection, plus promo versions.
OP17's Super Leader Alternate Art Luffy is the only Leader with that label on TCGplayer so far. Every Leader printing is its own entry in TurnZero HQ's One Piece catalog, priced daily, so you can track the Leaders you collect next to the ones you play. The one card your deck is built around. It starts the game face up in your Leader area, it is what your opponent attacks, and its color decides which cards your deck can include. It has power and a Life value but no cost, and it can attack each turn like a Character.
Exactly one, separate from the 50-card main deck and the 10-card DON!! deck.
It is how many cards from the top of your deck go face down into your Life area at the start of the game. When your Leader takes damage, you add a Life card to your hand. If your Leader takes damage when you have no Life cards left, you lose.
Most single-color Leaders have 5 Life and most two-color Leaders have 4, so a second color usually comes with one less Life. There are exceptions in both directions, so read the Leader you are looking at.
As of Bandai's list effective October 12, 2026: Dracule Mihawk (OP14-020), Nami (OP03-040) and Trafalgar Law (ST10-001). Monkey.D.Luffy (OP11-040) is legal but cannot be played with Charlotte Katakuri (OP11-067) or Charlotte Linlin (OP08-069) in the same deck.
A Leader you can buy as a starter deck, so the rest of the deck is already built around it. The 2026 starter decks ST-31 to ST-36 each come with one Leader and a 50-card deck for it.
