Phantasmal Flames Set Guide
The second Mega Evolution expansion. Mega Charizard X ex is the story of this set, at the table and in the price list, where its Special Illustration Rare stands far above everything else.
Overview
Phantasmal Flames is the second main expansion of the Mega Evolution series. Six of its ten Double Rares are Mega Evolution ex: Mega Heracross ex, Mega Charizard X ex, Mega Diancie ex, Mega Gengar ex, Mega Sharpedo ex and Mega Lopunny ex.
Darkness is its biggest type with 20 cards. Mega Gengar ex debuts here as a Double Rare; its Special Illustration Rare came later, in Ascended Heroes.
Cards and rarities
Phantasmal Flames has 130 cards. Every card shows its number over the printed total along the bottom, as in "001/094", next to the set code PFL.
The printed total is 94, so the 36 cards from 095 to 130 are secret rares. Set completion in TurnZero HQ counts a set against its printed total and keeps the secret rares apart, so finishing the main set and chasing the cards above it read as two separate goals. How set completion works →

What a complete set costs
One copy of every card in Phantasmal Flames, bought as singles, cost $1,096.52 on September 30, 2026. That is the sixth most expensive of the seven sets released in 2025.
The three most valuable cards, Mega Charizard X ex, Mega Charizard X ex and Mega Charizard X ex, come to $925.99, or 84% of the total. Without them the set costs $170.53. Of the 130 cards, 108 were under $2.00, together $35.99; the other 22 add up to $1,060.53.
Each card is counted at its cheapest priced variant, a Normal copy rather than a Reverse Holofoil where both exist, at its TCGplayer market price. This is what it costs to buy the set as singles. It is not what opening packs returns, and not what a complete set would sell for, which after fees and the many cards worth cents would be noticeably less.
Playing it
Phantasmal Flames carries the I regulation mark on all but two cards, legal in Standard under the April 10, 2026 rotation.
Mega Charizard X ex and Firebreather are built to work together: Firebreather puts up to 7 Fire Energy in your hand, and Inferno X turns every Fire Energy you can discard into 90 damage.
