The Mega Evolution Series

The sets in the series

The Mega Evolution series began on September 26, 2025, after the last Scarlet & Violet sets, and has released seven English sets since: five main expansions and two special sets between them. Together they hold 1,140 cards and 44 Mega Evolution ex.

Mega ex counts the Mega Evolution ex printed at Double Rare. The last column is what one copy of every card cost as singles, each at its cheapest variant and TCGplayer market price; the whole series came to $10,225.83. It shows how much value a set packs in, not what opening it returns. Each guide breaks its own total down.

What a Mega Evolution ex is

A Mega Evolution Pokémon ex is the series' headline card. It gives up three Prize cards when Knocked Out, one more than a regular Pokémon ex, in exchange for more HP and bigger attacks. Some are Basic Pokémon, like Mega Zygarde ex and Mega Darkrai ex, and go straight onto the Bench; others evolve from a Stage 1 or Stage 2 card, as Mega Gengar ex does. Ascended Heroes prints the most, 13, beside 26 regular Pokémon ex and a run of trainer's Pokémon. Perfect Order prints the fewest of the main expansions with four. 30th Celebration is the one set in the series with none: it is an anniversary set built around Pikachu, Mew ex and Mewtwo ex.

Every Mega Hyper Rare

The Mega Hyper Rare is the series' top rarity: a gold Mega Evolution ex, numbered last in its set. The Mega Evolution set introduced it with two, Ascended Heroes also has two, and every other main expansion has one. 30th Celebration has none, because it has no Mega Evolution ex.

The gold card is not always the set's most valuable. In Phantasmal Flames, Chaos Rising and Pitch Black the Special Illustration Rare of the same Pokémon sold for more, and Ascended Heroes' chase card is a Pikachu ex.

The chase card in each set

Every set has one card its collectors open packs for. Ascended Heroes and Phantasmal Flames sit far above the rest: Ascended Heroes' Pikachu ex and Mega Gengar ex Special Illustration Rares were the two most valuable cards in the series, and Phantasmal Flames' Mega Charizard X ex was third.

The set guides

Mega Evolution (September 26, 2025). The set that started the Mega Evolution series and brought back Mega Evolution. All ten of its Double Rares are Mega Evolution ex, and Mega Lucario ex leads both the table and the chase.

Phantasmal Flames (November 14, 2025). The second Mega Evolution expansion. Mega Charizard X ex is the story of this set, at the table and in the price list, where its Special Illustration Rare stands far above everything else.

Ascended Heroes (January 30, 2026). The biggest Pokémon set of 2026 by a wide margin: 295 cards, more than twice the size of the year's main expansions, built around trainer's Pokémon, Team Rocket and a long run of Mega Evolution ex.

Perfect Order (March 27, 2026). The third Mega Evolution expansion and the first main set of 2026. Mega Zygarde ex is the face of it, with a Pokémon Tool printed for it alone, and Meowth ex is the card players reached for first.

Chaos Rising (May 22, 2026). The fourth Mega Evolution expansion, with a strong Kalos lean. Mega Greninja ex carries it, both at the table and in the price list, with four more Mega Evolution ex beside it.

Pitch Black (July 17, 2026). The fifth Mega Evolution expansion and the darkest of the year: 18 Darkness Pokémon, Mega Darkrai ex as its face card, and two Supporters that reward decks without rule boxes.

30th Celebration (September 16, 2026). The anniversary set. It prints 30 different Pikachu cards, puts Mew ex and Mewtwo ex at the top of its chase list, and comes with a Classic Collection of 30 cards reprinted from across the game's history.

Collecting the series

Each set's printed total is the number after the slash on its cards, and everything numbered above it is a secret rare. Ascended Heroes is the biggest set in the series at 295 cards; the main expansions since Perfect Order have each landed between 120 and 124.

Set completion in TurnZero HQ counts each set against its printed total and keeps the secret rares apart, so finishing the main set and chasing the Mega Hyper Rare read as two separate goals. The card scanner reads the set code and number printed at the bottom of each card. Pokémon set completion →
