Emerald came out on May 1, 2005, with 107 cards: 86 Pokémon, 11 Trainers and 10 Energy. Its 11 Pokémon-ex, as many as Team Rocket Returns, include Milotic ex, Altaria ex, Deoxys ex and the three Regis.

It brought back several Hoenn Trainers, Rare Candy, Professor Birch, Lanette's Net Search and PokéNav among them, and added Scott and Mr. Stone's Project. It is the only EX set from Team Rocket Returns on without a Pokémon Star. The printed total is 106, and a secret Farfetch'd is 107.

Cards and rarities

Emerald has 107 cards. Every card shows its number over the printed total along the bottom, as in "4/106". The cards print a set symbol, not a set code; the code here is the short one the catalog and TurnZero HQ file the set under.

The printed total is 106, so Farfetch'd, 107/106, is the one secret rare. Set completion in TurnZero HQ counts a set against its printed total and keeps the secret rares apart, so finishing the main set and chasing the cards above it read as two separate goals. How set completion works →

What a complete set costs

One copy of every card in Emerald, bought as singles, cost $2,929.73 on October 22, 2026. That is the 14th most expensive of the sixteen sets in the EX series.

Complete set $2,929.73
Main set, 1 to 106 $2,822.26
1 secret rare $107.47
Top three cards $999.98 (34%)

The three most valuable cards, Rayquaza, Altaria ex and Regice ex, come to $999.98, or 34% of the total. Without them the set costs $1,929.75. Of the 107 cards, 49 were under $2.00, together $51.73; the other 58 add up to $2,878.00.

Each card is counted at its cheapest priced variant, usually a Normal copy rather than a Reverse Holofoil, or a stamped promo copy where the catalog prices one lower, at its TCGplayer market price. This is what it costs to buy the set as singles. It is not what opening packs returns, and not what a complete set would sell for, which after fees and the many cards worth cents would be noticeably less.

Playing it

Emerald is not legal in Standard or Expanded as a set: Expanded starts with the Black & White series in 2011. The catalog marks eight of its 107 cards as legal anyway, seven of them in Standard too.

They are the six basic Energy, which are always legal; Rare Candy, legal in both formats; and Lum Berry, legal in Expanded only.

Each card other than basic Energy shares its name and text with a later, legal printing, which is what makes an older copy playable. Every other card in the set is legal in neither format.
