Gray Yu-Gi-Oh! Cards: Tokens

A gray Yu-Gi-Oh! card is a Token. Tokens are monsters a card effect creates on the field, so they never start in any of your decks. The gray Token cards that come in some products are markers for those monsters, and the gray keeps them from being shuffled into a deck by mistake.

Gray is the frame of a Token. It is never in a deck. Tokens: monsters a card effect creates on the field. They are never in any deck and vanish when they leave the field.

27 cards released in the TCG are gray, as of November 2, 2026. See the full color chart →

What a Gray Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Is

Gray is the frame of a Token card. A Token card does not do anything by itself: its text says it can be used as a particular Token, and that if you use it for another, you apply that Token's stats instead. Konami's rulebook lets you use any object as a Token, as long as it can show Attack or Defense Position.

The effect that makes the Token sets everything about it. Scapegoat, for example, Special Summons four Sheep Tokens as Level 1 EARTH Beasts with 0 ATK and 0 DEF.

How Tokens Play

A Token exists only on the field. When it would leave, to the Graveyard, the hand, the Deck or banishment, it is simply removed instead, and it cannot be brought back.

While it is there, a Token is a monster. It can attack, block, be Tributed and be used as Fusion, Synchro or Link Material unless an effect says otherwise. It cannot be used as Xyz Material, and some cards rule Tokens out by name, as Starving Venom Fusion Dragon's "except Tokens" does.

What to Know About Gray Cards

  • Never in the Main Deck or Extra Deck, so gray cards do not count toward either.
  • When a Token leaves the field it ceases to exist.
  • Tokens cannot be Xyz Material.
  • A Token takes a Monster Zone, which can stop your opponent from filling their own field if an effect gives them one.
