Green Yu-Gi-Oh! Cards: Spell Cards

A green Yu-Gi-Oh! card is a Spell Card, called a Magic Card on the earliest printings and in the anime. Spells are the cards you normally play from your hand on your own turn, and every one of them shares the same green frame: the small icon beside the words Spell Card is what tells the six kinds apart.

Green is the frame of a Spell Card. It starts in the Main Deck. Spell Cards: the six kinds of Spell, from Normal to Field, all with the same green frame.

2,834 cards released in the TCG are green, as of November 2, 2026. See the full color chart →

What a Green Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Is

Teal-green is the frame of a Spell Card. In the corner where a monster has its Attribute, a Spell says SPELL, and under the name it reads [Spell Card], with an icon after it if it is not a Normal Spell. Spells have no Level, ATK or DEF.

Green also appears on the bottom half of every Pendulum Monster, because a Pendulum Monster can be placed in a Pendulum Zone as a Spell. That half-green card is a monster first: see the two-tone pages below.

How Spell Cards Play

You can activate most Spells only in your own Main Phase, straight from your hand or after Setting them. A Quick-Play Spell is the exception: you can activate it from your hand during any phase of your own turn, and once it has been Set, on your opponent's turn too, though not the turn you Set it.

Normal, Quick-Play and Ritual Spells go to the Graveyard after they resolve. Continuous, Equip and Field Spells stay on the field and keep working. A Field Spell goes in its own Field Zone, and each player can have one.

What to Know About Green Cards

  • No icon: Normal Spell. The others are Quick-Play, Continuous, Equip, Field and Ritual.
  • Quick-Play Spells are Spell Speed 2; every other Spell is Spell Speed 1, so it can only start a chain.
  • Polymerization and Ritual Spells are green; the monsters they Summon are purple and light blue.
  • Every green card counts toward your Main Deck.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a green Yu-Gi-Oh! card mean?

A green card is a Spell Card. It goes in your Main Deck, and you normally activate it during your own Main Phase. The icon beside the words Spell Card tells you which of the six kinds it is: Normal (no icon), Quick-Play, Continuous, Equip, Field or Ritual.

Why are some Yu-Gi-Oh! cards half green?

A card that is half green on the bottom is a Pendulum Monster, not a Spell. The top half shows its monster type. The green half is there because a Pendulum Monster can also be placed in a Pendulum Zone, where it is treated as a Spell Card.

Are Spell Cards and Magic Cards the same in Yu-Gi-Oh!?

Yes. The earliest printings and the anime called them Magic Cards; the game has called them Spell Cards for many years. The frame is the same green.
