Pokémon TCG · 2017 Set Guide
The first Sun & Moon set, and the first with Pokémon-GX, each with a once-a-game GX attack. It also introduced Rainbow Rares, and the rainbow Umbreon-GX is its most valuable card.
Sun & Moon started its series in February 2017 with the Pokémon of the Alola region. Its 149 numbered cards are followed by 23 more above the printed total: eight Rainbow Rare Pokémon-GX, six other secret rares and nine basic Energy cards (164 to 172), which the catalog lists as Common.
It replaced Pokémon-EX with Pokémon-GX. A Pokémon-GX still gives up two Prize cards, and each has a GX attack, a stronger move you can use only once a game across all your GX attacks. Many are Evolution Pokémon rather than Basics, such as Decidueye-GX and the Umbreon-GX and Espeon-GX that evolve from Eevee.
Sun & Moon has 172 cards. Every card shows its number over the printed total along the bottom, as in "1/149", next to the set code SUM.
The printed total is 149. The 23 cards from 150 to 172 are numbered above it: 14 secret rares (eight Rainbow Rares and six Rare Secret cards) and nine basic Energy cards the catalog lists as Common. The catalog also files one more card under this set with a letter after the number: Eevee (101a). It is an alternate printing outside the numbered set, so it isn't counted here. Set completion in TurnZero HQ counts a set against its printed total and keeps the secret rares apart, so finishing the main set and chasing the cards above it read as two separate goals. These are each card's headline TCGplayer market price on October 22, 2026. Prices can move a long way, most of all in a set's first months, so treat them as a snapshot. Each card's page shows today's price for every variant and its 90-day chart. How Pokémon card prices work →
One copy of every card in Sun & Moon, bought as singles, cost $653.42 on October 22, 2026. That is the 14th most expensive of the sixteen sets in the Sun & Moon series.
The three most valuable cards, two Umbreon-GX cards and Espeon-GX, come to $241.49, or 37% of the total. Without them the set costs $411.93. Of the 163 cards, 126 were under $2.00, together $31.71; the other 37 add up to $621.71.
Nine cards had no TCGplayer price on file and aren't counted: Grass Energy, Fire Energy, Water Energy, Lightning Energy, Psychic Energy, Fighting Energy, Darkness Energy, Metal Energy and Fairy Energy.
Left out: one alternate printing the catalog files under this set with a letter after the number, Eevee (101a). They aren't part of the numbered 172.
Each card is counted at its cheapest priced variant, a Normal copy rather than a Reverse Holofoil where both exist, at its TCGplayer market price. This is what it costs to buy the set as singles. It is not what opening packs returns, and not what a complete set would sell for, which after fees and the many cards worth cents would be noticeably less.
No Sun & Moon card carries a regulation mark, so none is Standard-legal as printed, apart from its basic Energy cards, which Standard allows from any set. Standard has allowed only the H, I and J marks since April 10, 2026. Every card in Sun & Moon is legal in Expanded, which takes every set from Black & White on.
A reprint with a legal mark makes older printings of the same card legal again, so check a card's name before you rule it out.
