Dragon-Type Pokémon Cards

Dragon is the Pokémon TCG's gold type, home of Dragapult, Rayquaza and Dragonite. It has no Basic Energy card, so Dragon attacks cost two other types, and in Standard no Dragon Pokémon has a Weakness.

How Dragon Plays

Every Dragon deck is a two-type deck. Dragapult ex's Phantom Dive costs Fire and Psychic and does 200 plus 6 damage counters spread across your opponent's Bench, Raging Bolt ex's Bellowing Thunder costs Lightning and Fighting and does 70 for each Basic Energy you discard from your Pokémon, and Mega Dragonite ex's Ryuno Glide costs Water and two Lightning for 330.

The reward for the awkward costs is power and no Weakness. Tatsugiri ex's Cinnabar Lure fills your Bench from the top 10 cards of your deck, and Mega Latias ex's Illusory Impulse does 300.

Things to Know About Dragon Pokémon Cards

  • There is no Basic Dragon Energy. Dragon attacks are paid with other types' Energy, usually two different ones.
  • No Dragon Pokémon in Standard has a Weakness or a Resistance, and no Standard Pokémon is weak to Dragon.
  • Older Dragons did have a Weakness: Dragon in the Black & White series and Fairy in XY and Sun & Moon. Lillie's Clefairy ex gives today's Dragons a Psychic Weakness.
  • The Dragon type arrived in Dragons Exalted in 2012. Dragonite and other earlier Dragons were Colorless cards.

Classic Dragon Cards Collectors Know

The Other Types

Grass Plants and Bugs. Grass decks heal, move Energy around and power up off Grass Energy in play, and almost every Grass Pokémon is weak to Fire. Fire Big damage that costs Energy. Fire attacks often discard Energy to hit hard, Charizard is the type's face, and Fire is weak to Water. Water The biggest type by printings. Water covers Water and Ice Pokémon, mixes raw damage with damage counters, and is weak to Lightning or, for Ice types, Metal. Lightning Pikachu's type. Lightning decks attach Energy fast and hit hard for it, Lightning is weak to Fighting, and it hits Water and Flying Pokémon for Weakness. Psychic Mewtwo, Mew and Gardevoir. Psychic decks scale damage off Energy and bend the rules, and Psychic is weak to Darkness or, for Fairy-origin Pokémon, Metal. Fighting Lucario, Machamp and the Rock and Ground Pokémon. Fighting decks hit hard and cheaply, and Fighting is the type the most Standard Pokémon are weak to. Darkness Umbreon, Darkrai and the Poison Pokémon. Darkness decks disrupt, poison and punish, and Darkness hits Psychic Pokémon for Weakness. Metal The card game's Steel type. Metal Pokémon are bulky, resist Grass, and hit Fairy-origin and Ice Pokémon for Weakness; Fire is their problem. Fairy The retired type. Fairy cards were printed from XY to Sun & Moon, were weak to Metal and resisted Darkness, and today's Fairy Pokémon are Psychic. Colorless Fits in any deck. Colorless costs can be paid with any Energy, so Colorless Pokémon such as Snorlax, Eevee and Bloodmoon Ursaluna slot into every type.
