Fairy-Type Pokémon Cards

Fairy was the Pokémon TCG's pink type, printed for the XY and Sun & Moon series and retired when Sword & Shield began in 2020. Fairy cards are still collected and still legal in Expanded, but no new ones are made: Sylveon, Gardevoir and the other Fairy Pokémon are Psychic cards now.

How Fairy Plays

Fairy cards were printed for six years, from the Kalos Starter Set in 2013 to Cosmic Eclipse in 2019. Nearly every one was weak to Metal and resisted Darkness, and the Dragon Pokémon printed in the same years were weak to Fairy, so a Fairy deck was the natural answer to a Dragon deck.

In Standard there are no Fairy cards left. A Fairy Pokémon printed today, such as Sylveon ex or Mega Gardevoir ex, is a Psychic card that keeps the old Metal Weakness, and Lillie's Clefairy ex brings back the Fairy rule by making the opponent's Dragon Pokémon weak to Psychic.

Things to Know About Fairy Pokémon Cards

  • Fairy cards were weak to Metal and resisted Darkness on nearly every card.
  • Dragon Pokémon from the XY and Sun & Moon series were printed weak to Fairy.
  • Fairy cards are legal in Expanded, which allows every set from Black & White on, but not in Standard.
  • Fairy Energy is still a Basic Energy card, but no Pokémon in Standard has a Fairy symbol in its attack cost.

Where Fairy Pokémon Are Now

Fairy Pokémon printed since 2020 are Psychic cards. These are legal in Standard and keep Fairy's old habits.

  • Sylveon ex: Magical Charm does 160 and makes the Defending Pokémon's attacks do 100 less next turn; Angelite shuffles 2 of your opponent's Benched Pokémon into their deck. Weak to Metal, as Fairy cards were.
  • Mega Gardevoir ex: Gardevoir was a Fairy card in XY and Sun & Moon. Now Psychic, Mega Symphonia does 50 for each Psychic Energy on all your Pokémon.
  • Lillie's Clefairy ex: Fairy Zone makes your opponent's Dragon Pokémon weak to Psychic, the Fairy-beats-Dragon rule on a Psychic card.

The Other Types

Grass Plants and Bugs. Grass decks heal, move Energy around and power up off Grass Energy in play, and almost every Grass Pokémon is weak to Fire. Fire Big damage that costs Energy. Fire attacks often discard Energy to hit hard, Charizard is the type's face, and Fire is weak to Water. Water The biggest type by printings. Water covers Water and Ice Pokémon, mixes raw damage with damage counters, and is weak to Lightning or, for Ice types, Metal. Lightning Pikachu's type. Lightning decks attach Energy fast and hit hard for it, Lightning is weak to Fighting, and it hits Water and Flying Pokémon for Weakness. Psychic Mewtwo, Mew and Gardevoir. Psychic decks scale damage off Energy and bend the rules, and Psychic is weak to Darkness or, for Fairy-origin Pokémon, Metal. Fighting Lucario, Machamp and the Rock and Ground Pokémon. Fighting decks hit hard and cheaply, and Fighting is the type the most Standard Pokémon are weak to. Darkness Umbreon, Darkrai and the Poison Pokémon. Darkness decks disrupt, poison and punish, and Darkness hits Psychic Pokémon for Weakness. Metal The card game's Steel type. Metal Pokémon are bulky, resist Grass, and hit Fairy-origin and Ice Pokémon for Weakness; Fire is their problem. Dragon No Basic Energy and no Weakness. Dragon Pokémon pay with two other types, hit hard, and in Standard nothing is weak to them and they are weak to nothing. Colorless Fits in any deck. Colorless costs can be paid with any Energy, so Colorless Pokémon such as Snorlax, Eevee and Bloodmoon Ursaluna slot into every type.
