Psychic-Type Pokémon Cards

Psychic is the Pokémon TCG's purple type, home of Mewtwo, Mew, Gardevoir and, since Fairy was retired in 2020, Sylveon and the other Fairy Pokémon. Psychic decks bend the rules with Abilities and scale damage with Energy, and most Psychic cards resist Fighting.

How Psychic Plays

Psychic is the type most likely to break a rule. Mew ex's Memory Helix lets it use the attacks of any of your Benched Pokémon, Latias ex's Skyliner gives your Basic Pokémon no Retreat Cost, and Lillie's Clefairy ex changes the Weakness of your opponent's Dragon Pokémon to Psychic.

Its big attackers count Energy. Mega Gardevoir ex's Overflowing Wishes searches out a Basic Psychic Energy for each of your Benched Pokémon, then Mega Symphonia does 50 for each Psychic Energy on all your Pokémon.

Things to Know About Psychic Pokémon Cards

  • Psychic Pokémon are usually weak to Darkness; the ones that were Fairy types in the video games, such as Sylveon, are weak to Metal instead.
  • Most Psychic Pokémon resist Fighting, which takes 30 off a Fighting attack.
  • Psychic hits Fighting Pokémon that were Fighting types in the video games, such as Lucario and Machamp, for Weakness.
  • Gengar has been both: its line is Darkness in Standard today, but it was Psychic for most of the card game's history.

The Other Types

Grass Plants and Bugs. Grass decks heal, move Energy around and power up off Grass Energy in play, and almost every Grass Pokémon is weak to Fire. Fire Big damage that costs Energy. Fire attacks often discard Energy to hit hard, Charizard is the type's face, and Fire is weak to Water. Water The biggest type by printings. Water covers Water and Ice Pokémon, mixes raw damage with damage counters, and is weak to Lightning or, for Ice types, Metal. Lightning Pikachu's type. Lightning decks attach Energy fast and hit hard for it, Lightning is weak to Fighting, and it hits Water and Flying Pokémon for Weakness. Fighting Lucario, Machamp and the Rock and Ground Pokémon. Fighting decks hit hard and cheaply, and Fighting is the type the most Standard Pokémon are weak to. Darkness Umbreon, Darkrai and the Poison Pokémon. Darkness decks disrupt, poison and punish, and Darkness hits Psychic Pokémon for Weakness. Metal The card game's Steel type. Metal Pokémon are bulky, resist Grass, and hit Fairy-origin and Ice Pokémon for Weakness; Fire is their problem. Fairy The retired type. Fairy cards were printed from XY to Sun & Moon, were weak to Metal and resisted Darkness, and today's Fairy Pokémon are Psychic. Dragon No Basic Energy and no Weakness. Dragon Pokémon pay with two other types, hit hard, and in Standard nothing is weak to them and they are weak to nothing. Colorless Fits in any deck. Colorless costs can be paid with any Energy, so Colorless Pokémon such as Snorlax, Eevee and Bloodmoon Ursaluna slot into every type.
