Grass-Type Pokémon Cards

Grass is the Pokémon TCG's green type: plant and Bug Pokémon such as Venusaur, Leafeon and Scyther. Its decks are good at healing and at putting extra Grass Energy into play, and nearly every Grass card shares one Weakness, Fire.

How Grass Plays

Grass decks are built around getting more Energy into play than the one-a-turn attachment allows. Teal Mask Ogerpon ex attaches a Basic Grass Energy from your hand once a turn and draws a card, Hydrapple ex attaches another and heals 30, and Mega Venusaur ex can move Basic Grass Energy between your Pokémon as often as you like. Many Grass attacks then count that Energy: Hydrapple ex's Syrup Storm does 30 more for each Grass Energy on all your Pokémon.

Healing is the type's other habit. Mega Venusaur ex heals 30 from itself each time it attacks, and Leafeon ex's Moss Agate heals 100 from each of your Benched Pokémon. A Grass deck often wins by making the opponent's two-hit Knock Outs into three-hit ones.

Things to Know About Grass Pokémon Cards

  • Almost every Grass Pokémon in Standard is weak to Fire, so a Fire deck is the matchup Grass players worry about first.
  • Grass hits Fighting and Darkness Pokémon for Weakness, which covers most of the Rock, Ground and Dark Pokémon in the card game.
  • Basic Grass Energy is one of the eight Basic Energy cards, so a Grass deck can run as many as it likes.
  • Poison types were Grass in the original 1999 sets, which is why Base Set Nidoking and Koffing are Grass cards.

  • Mega Venusaur ex: Solar Transfer moves Basic Grass Energy between your Pokémon as often as you like, and Jungle Dump does 240 and heals 30 from itself.
  • Teal Mask Ogerpon ex: Teal Dance attaches a Basic Grass Energy from your hand once a turn and draws a card; Myriad Leaf Shower adds 30 for each Energy on both Active Pokémon.
  • Hydrapple ex: Ripening Charge attaches a Basic Grass Energy from hand and heals 30; Syrup Storm adds 30 for each Grass Energy on all your Pokémon.
  • Leafeon ex: Verdant Storm does 60 for each Energy on all your opponent's Pokémon, so it punishes a board that has invested in Energy.

Classic Grass Cards Collectors Know

Older cards that collectors know the type by. No prices here: vintage cards sell too rarely, in too many conditions, for one number to mean much. How to check what your Pokémon cards are worth →

  • Venusaur: The Base Set holo from 1999, one of the three original starter evolutions.
  • Erika's Venusaur: Gym Challenge (2000), from the run of Gym Leader cards.
  • Shining Celebi: Neo Destiny (2002), one of the first shiny Pokémon cards.

The Other Types

Fire Big damage that costs Energy. Fire attacks often discard Energy to hit hard, Charizard is the type's face, and Fire is weak to Water. Water The biggest type by printings. Water covers Water and Ice Pokémon, mixes raw damage with damage counters, and is weak to Lightning or, for Ice types, Metal. Lightning Pikachu's type. Lightning decks attach Energy fast and hit hard for it, Lightning is weak to Fighting, and it hits Water and Flying Pokémon for Weakness. Psychic Mewtwo, Mew and Gardevoir. Psychic decks scale damage off Energy and bend the rules, and Psychic is weak to Darkness or, for Fairy-origin Pokémon, Metal. Fighting Lucario, Machamp and the Rock and Ground Pokémon. Fighting decks hit hard and cheaply, and Fighting is the type the most Standard Pokémon are weak to. Darkness Umbreon, Darkrai and the Poison Pokémon. Darkness decks disrupt, poison and punish, and Darkness hits Psychic Pokémon for Weakness. Metal The card game's Steel type. Metal Pokémon are bulky, resist Grass, and hit Fairy-origin and Ice Pokémon for Weakness; Fire is their problem. Fairy The retired type. Fairy cards were printed from XY to Sun & Moon, were weak to Metal and resisted Darkness, and today's Fairy Pokémon are Psychic. Dragon No Basic Energy and no Weakness. Dragon Pokémon pay with two other types, hit hard, and in Standard nothing is weak to them and they are weak to nothing. Colorless Fits in any deck. Colorless costs can be paid with any Energy, so Colorless Pokémon such as Snorlax, Eevee and Bloodmoon Ursaluna slot into every type.
