Fire-Type Pokémon Cards

Fire is the Pokémon TCG's red type, home of Charizard, Reshiram and Ceruledge. Fire attacks hit hard and often pay for it by discarding Energy, Fire decks are weak to Water, and Fire is the type that beats Grass and Metal.

How Fire Plays

The Fire trade-off is printed on the cards. Reshiram ex's Scorching Fire does 200 and discards an Energy, Mega Charizard Y ex's Explosion Y discards 3 Energy to do 280 to any of your opponent's Pokémon, and Mega Charizard X ex's Inferno X does 90 for each Fire Energy you choose to discard from among your Pokémon. A Fire deck spends Energy fast, so it runs plenty of Basic Fire Energy and ways to get it back.

Some Fire cards turn that discard pile into a resource. Ceruledge ex's Abyssal Flames does 20 more for each Energy card in your discard pile, so the more a Fire deck has spent, the harder it hits.

Things to Know About Fire Pokémon Cards

  • Fire is weak to Water on nearly every card, and Fire hits Grass and Metal Pokémon for double damage.
  • Charizard is the most printed Fire Pokémon, and the Fire Charizards are among the most collected cards in the game.
  • Not every Charizard is Fire. Charizard ex from Obsidian Flames and Paldean Fates is a Darkness card, and Mega Charizard X from Flashfire is a Dragon.
  • Because Fire attacks discard Energy, a Fire Pokémon often needs a turn to reload after a big hit.

Popular Fire Pokémon in Standard

Fire Pokémon legal in Standard that show what the type does. Not a ranking: each is here for what its text does.

  • Mega Charizard X ex: Inferno X does 90 damage for each Fire Energy you discard from among your Pokémon, so its damage is limited only by the Energy you have in play.
  • Flareon ex: Burning Charge does 130 and attaches up to 2 Basic Energy from your deck to one of your Pokémon; Carnelian does 280.
  • Ceruledge ex: Abyssal Flames does 30 plus 20 for each Energy card in your discard pile for a single Fire Energy.
  • Reshiram ex: A Basic Pokémon whose Scorching Fire does 200 for three Energy and discards one of them.

Classic Fire Cards Collectors Know

Older cards that collectors know the type by. No prices here: vintage cards sell too rarely, in too many conditions, for one number to mean much. How to check what your Pokémon cards are worth →

  • Charizard: The 1999 Base Set holo, the card most people picture when they think of valuable Pokémon cards.
  • Shining Charizard: Neo Destiny (2002), the shiny black Charizard.
  • Charizard: The Secret Rare from EX Dragon (2003).

The Other Types

Grass Plants and Bugs. Grass decks heal, move Energy around and power up off Grass Energy in play, and almost every Grass Pokémon is weak to Fire. Water The biggest type by printings. Water covers Water and Ice Pokémon, mixes raw damage with damage counters, and is weak to Lightning or, for Ice types, Metal. Lightning Pikachu's type. Lightning decks attach Energy fast and hit hard for it, Lightning is weak to Fighting, and it hits Water and Flying Pokémon for Weakness. Psychic Mewtwo, Mew and Gardevoir. Psychic decks scale damage off Energy and bend the rules, and Psychic is weak to Darkness or, for Fairy-origin Pokémon, Metal. Fighting Lucario, Machamp and the Rock and Ground Pokémon. Fighting decks hit hard and cheaply, and Fighting is the type the most Standard Pokémon are weak to. Darkness Umbreon, Darkrai and the Poison Pokémon. Darkness decks disrupt, poison and punish, and Darkness hits Psychic Pokémon for Weakness. Metal The card game's Steel type. Metal Pokémon are bulky, resist Grass, and hit Fairy-origin and Ice Pokémon for Weakness; Fire is their problem. Fairy The retired type. Fairy cards were printed from XY to Sun & Moon, were weak to Metal and resisted Darkness, and today's Fairy Pokémon are Psychic. Dragon No Basic Energy and no Weakness. Dragon Pokémon pay with two other types, hit hard, and in Standard nothing is weak to them and they are weak to nothing. Colorless Fits in any deck. Colorless costs can be paid with any Energy, so Colorless Pokémon such as Snorlax, Eevee and Bloodmoon Ursaluna slot into every type.
