What Scarlet & Violet changed

The series brought back the Pokémon ex, written in lowercase, in place of Sword & Shield's Pokémon V, VMAX and VSTAR. A Pokémon ex gives up two Prize cards when it is Knocked Out. Some are Tera Pokémon ex, which take no damage from attacks while they are on the Bench; Obsidian Flames' Charizard ex is one. Reading the rule box on a card →

Later sets layered new ideas on top. Paradox Rift gave Ancient and Future Pokémon their own tags, 17 cards of each, and Temporal Forces built on them while bringing back ACE SPEC cards, powerful Trainers limited to one per deck. Journey Together brought back trainer's Pokémon, named for the character who owns them, and Destined Rivals printed 90 of them.

Rarities across the series

Every Scarlet & Violet set has Special Illustration Rares, 167 across the series. The gold Hyper Rare is the top rarity in every set except Black Bolt and White Flare, which end on a single Black White Rare instead.

The chase card in each set

Every set has one card its collectors open packs for. Across the series, Prismatic Evolutions' Umbreon ex is in a league of its own, and Paldean Fates' Mew ex is the only other card above $800.

The set guides

Scarlet & Violet (March 31, 2023). The base set of the Scarlet & Violet series. It brought back Pokémon ex, introduced the Illustration Rare and Special Illustration Rare, and started with Miraidon ex and Koraidon ex.

Paldea Evolved (June 9, 2023). The biggest set of 2023, at 279 cards. Its Pokémon ex include the Paldea starters' final forms, but the card collectors chase is a Magikarp, an Illustration Rare worth more than three times the next card.

Obsidian Flames (August 11, 2023). The Charizard set. Its Charizard ex is a Darkness-type Tera Pokémon, it has more Pokémon ex than any other 2023 set, and Charizard ex takes three of the top five places in its chase list.

151 (September 22, 2023). The original 151 Pokémon, in Pokédex order from Bulbasaur at 001 to Mew ex at 151. Its chase list is led by the Kanto starters: Charizard ex, Blastoise ex, Venusaur ex, and Charmander and Squirtle.

Paradox Rift (November 3, 2023). The set that introduced Ancient and Future Paradox Pokémon. Roaring Moon ex and Iron Valiant ex lead the two sides, Gholdengo ex leads the table, and an Illustration Rare Groudon leads the chase.

Paldean Fates (January 26, 2024). The shiny set. Only 91 of its 245 cards are numbered in the main set; 132 more are Shiny Pokémon, and the Mew ex Special Illustration Rare is the most valuable 2024 card in these guides.

Temporal Forces (March 22, 2024). Ancient against Future. Temporal Forces splits its headline Pokémon between the two, brought ACE SPEC cards back to the game, and has no single card that carries its value.

Twilight Masquerade (May 24, 2024). The Ogerpon set. All four of its masks are Pokémon ex here, beside Greninja ex and Dragapult ex, and the Greninja ex Special Illustration Rare is worth twice the next card.

Shrouded Fable (August 2, 2024). The smallest set in these guides at 99 cards, and the darkest: Pecharunt ex and three poison Pokémon ex, with a chase list led by Illustration Rares and a gold Darkness Energy.

Stellar Crown (September 13, 2024). The Terapagos set. Its Pokémon ex include Venusaur ex and Blastoise ex, but the cards collectors chase are two Illustration Rares, Squirtle and Bulbasaur, about a dollar apart.

Surging Sparks (November 8, 2024). The biggest set of 2024 at 252 cards. Pikachu ex leads it at the table and in the price list, and its Special Illustration Rare is the set's chase card.

Prismatic Evolutions (January 17, 2025). The Eevee set. Every one of Eevee's eight evolutions is a Tera Pokémon ex here, each with a Special Illustration Rare, and those eight cards are the eight most valuable in the set.

Journey Together (March 28, 2025). The first Scarlet & Violet expansion with trainer's Pokémon: Pokémon named for the character who owns them, from Lillie's Clefairy ex to Hop's Zacian ex.

Destined Rivals (May 30, 2025). Team Rocket against the heroes. Destined Rivals has 90 trainer's Pokémon, the most of any set in these guides, and Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex at the top of its chase list.

Black Bolt (July 18, 2025). One half of Scarlet & Violet's Unova finale, released the same day as White Flare. Zekrom ex leads it, and half of its 172 cards are numbered above the printed total.

White Flare (July 18, 2025). The other half of Scarlet & Violet's Unova finale. Reshiram ex leads it, with Hydreigon ex and Keldeo ex, and like Black Bolt it is more secret rare than main set.

Scarlet & Violet in Standard

The April 10, 2026 rotation took the G regulation mark out of Standard. Every 2023 Scarlet & Violet set and Paldean Fates carry a G throughout, so they left Standard as printed. From Temporal Forces on, most cards carry an H or an I and are still legal; Prismatic Evolutions lost the most, 29 G cards, and each guide lists its own. Scarlet & Violet cards are still legal in Expanded. How to build a Pokémon deck →

The Mega Evolution series followed on September 26, 2025, swapping the headline card for the Mega Evolution Pokémon ex, worth three Prize cards, and the gold Hyper Rare for the Mega Hyper Rare. The Mega Evolution series →
