Pokémon TCG · 2013 Set Guide
A 39-card introductory set released ahead of the XY expansion: the three Kalos starter lines, regular Pokémon and six Trainers, with no rare cards and no rarity on any card in the catalog.
The Kalos Starter Set came out in November 2013, three months before the XY expansion, as a way into the new series. Its 39 cards carry no rarity in the catalog and include no Pokémon-EX: the Chespin, Fennekin and Froakie lines, other regular Pokémon, and six Trainers from Poké Ball to Tierno.
It also has Fairy-type Pokémon, Snubbull, Granbull and Swirlix, which the XY set made a full part of the game in February 2014. Prices are low across the board, and Snorlax is the only card above $15.
Kalos Starter Set has 39 cards. Every card shows its number over the printed total along the bottom, as in "1/39", next to the set code KSS.
Every card is numbered within the printed total of 39, so Kalos Starter Set has no secret rares. Set completion in TurnZero HQ counts a set against its printed total and keeps the secret rares apart, so finishing the main set and chasing the cards above it read as two separate goals. How set completion works →
No card in the set has a rule box. The three Stage 2 starters lead it:
Greninja
Kalos Starter Set #14
140 HP Stage 2. Aqua Edge does 80; Mat Block does 40 and, on heads, discards an Energy from your opponent's Active Pokémon.
Chesnaught
Kalos Starter Set #5
150 HP Stage 2. Tumbling Attack does 80, or 120 on heads.
Snorlax
Kalos Starter Set #26
120 HP Basic. Strength does 70; Rock Smash does 10, or 40 on heads.
Two of its six Trainers:
Kalos Starter Set's chase card is Snorlax, numbered 26/39, a card the catalog lists without a rarity, illustrated by Naoki Saito, at $64.88 on October 22, 2026.
Miltank (27/39) was second at $12.76 and Bidoof (29/39) third at $8.59.
Snorlax is printed only once in Kalos Starter Set, here.
Only the exact version is worth its price. The number at the bottom of the card and the rarity symbol beside it tell you which one you pulled. Reading the number and rarity symbol →
Snorlax leads by a wide margin, and every other card is under $13.

These are each card's headline TCGplayer market price on October 22, 2026. Prices can move a long way, most of all in a set's first months, so treat them as a snapshot. Each card's page shows today's price for every variant and its 90-day chart. How Pokémon card prices work →
One copy of every card in Kalos Starter Set, bought as singles, cost $129.85 on October 22, 2026. That is the least expensive of the fifteen sets in the XY series.
The three most valuable cards, Snorlax, Miltank and Bidoof, come to $86.23, or 66% of the total. Without them the set costs $43.62. Of the 39 cards, 31 were under $2.00, together $21.86; the other 8 add up to $107.99.
Each card is counted at its cheapest priced variant, a Normal copy rather than a Reverse Holofoil where both exist, at its TCGplayer market price. This is what it costs to buy the set as singles. It is not what opening packs returns, and not what a complete set would sell for, which after fees and the many cards worth cents would be noticeably less.
No Kalos Starter Set card carries a regulation mark, so none is Standard-legal as printed. Standard has allowed only the H, I and J marks since April 10, 2026. Every card in Kalos Starter Set is legal in Expanded, which takes every set from Black & White on.
A reprint with a legal mark makes older printings of the same card legal again, so check a card's name before you rule it out.
