The Cards column gives the numbered cards and, after the plus, the cards above the printed total. The last column is what one copy of every card cost as singles, each at its cheapest variant and TCGplayer market price, on the date beside it. It shows how much value a set packs in, not what opening it returns.
XY kept the Pokémon-EX from Black & White and built on top of them. From the XY set on, a Mega Evolution Pokémon-EX evolves from its Pokémon-EX, and becoming one ends your turn under the Mega Evolution rule. Phantom Forces added Spirit Link Tools that let the turn go on, and Primal Clash added Primal Reversion for Kyogre and Groudon, which works the same way.
BREAKthrough introduced BREAK Evolution: a Pokémon BREAK is printed sideways, evolves from the Pokémon of the same name and keeps its attacks, Abilities, Weakness, Resistance and Retreat Cost. The series also printed the Fairy type for the first time in a main expansion, and it ended with Evolutions, a return to the 1999 Base Set's Pokémon and artwork.
One headline Pokémon from each set's guide.

Pokémon BREAK appear only from BREAKthrough on, and Steam Siege has the most. The Kalos Starter Set has no rarities at all, and XY itself no secret rares. Generations' Radiant Collection is counted in its row. Counts come from the Pokémon catalog and leave out companion lists.
Every set has one card its collectors open packs for. In XY it is usually a full-art or secret-rare Pokémon-EX, and in Flashfire and Ancient Origins a secret-rare Mega Evolution. Across the series, Flashfire's M Charizard-EX was the most valuable card the guides list, at $1,501.23 on Oct 22.

Kalos Starter Set (November 8, 2013). A 39-card introductory set released ahead of the XY expansion: the three Kalos starter lines, regular Pokémon and six Trainers, with no rare cards and no rarity on any card in the catalog.
XY (February 5, 2014). The first XY expansion. It brought Mega Evolution and Fairy-type Pokémon into the main series, and its six full-art Pokémon-EX, led by Blastoise-EX, are its most valuable cards.
Flashfire (May 7, 2014). Charizard's set. Flashfire prints Charizard-EX three times and M Charizard-EX four times, and the secret-rare M Charizard-EX (108) is worth more than the rest of the set's top ten together.
Furious Fists (August 13, 2014). A set built around Fighting Pokémon, with Lucario-EX, Hawlucha-EX and the Korrina Supporter, and Seismitoad-EX's Item lock. The full-art Dragonite-EX leads its value.
Phantom Forces (November 5, 2014). A set of Gengar-EX and Team Flare's Gear Items, with VS Seeker and Battle Compressor among its Trainers. A secret-rare Dialga-EX is its most valuable card, ahead of the full-art Gengar-EX.
Primal Clash (February 4, 2015). The set of Primal Reversion: Kyogre-EX and Groudon-EX become Primal Kyogre-EX and Primal Groudon-EX. It is the biggest XY set to that point, with a run of full arts from 147 to 160.
Double Crisis (March 25, 2015). A 34-card special set split between Team Aqua and Team Magma. Its two Pokémon-EX, Team Aqua's Kyogre-EX and Team Magma's Groudon-EX, are printed only as full arts and hold almost all of its value.
Roaring Skies (May 6, 2015). A set built around Rayquaza, with two Rayquaza-EX, two M Rayquaza-EX and the full-art M Rayquaza-EX at the top. It also printed Shaymin-EX, now banned in Expanded.
Ancient Origins (August 12, 2015). A set of legendary Pokémon-EX, Hoopa-EX, Giratina-EX and Lugia-EX among them, with Hex Maniac and Forest of Giant Plants, both now banned in Expanded. Its top three cards are secret-rare Mega and Primal Pokémon.
BREAKthrough (November 4, 2015). The set that introduced BREAK Evolution, a sideways gold card that builds on an evolved Pokémon. Mewtwo dominates its value, with two secret-rare Mewtwo-EX at the top.
BREAKpoint (February 3, 2016). The second BREAK set, with Greninja BREAK, Trevenant BREAK and Gyarados-EX. A secret-rare Gyarados-EX leads its value. Two of its Trainers, Puzzle of Time and Delinquent, are now banned in Expanded.
Generations (February 22, 2016). A special set for the Pokémon TCG's 20th anniversary, with many of the original Kanto Pokémon and a 32-card Radiant Collection inside. The Radiant Collection's full-art Flareon-EX and Sylveon-EX lead it.
Fates Collide (May 2, 2016). A set of Pokémon-EX and Pokémon BREAK, from Alakazam-EX to Lugia BREAK, with N back as a Supporter. A secret-rare Alakazam-EX leads its value, just ahead of the full-art Umbreon-EX.
Steam Siege (August 3, 2016). The XY set with the most Pokémon BREAK, seven of them, and fewer Pokémon-EX than most. Volcanion-EX and Magearna-EX are new; a secret-rare Gardevoir-EX is its most valuable card.
Evolutions (November 2, 2016). The last XY set, built on the Pokémon of the 1999 Base Set, much of it with the original artwork. The full-art M Charizard-EX leads it, and the holo Charizard is second.
