What's in the box

These are the cards that decide how the deck plays. Each one links to its card page, with its current price.

How it plays

Battle Academy teaches the game rather than competing at it. The Armarouge ex and Pikachu ex decks come with guides that walk two players through their first games turn by turn, and the Darkrai ex deck comes with the advanced rulebook for when you are ready. The board shows where every card goes.

Each deck has one Pokémon ex as its finisher and a few evolution lines around it. Armarouge ex's Armor Cannon does 200 and discards a Fire Energy, Pikachu ex's Thunderbolt does 120, and Darkrai ex's Night Impact does 110. The decks run Nemona, Great Ball and Potion rather than the stronger Trainers a tournament deck uses, which keeps the choices simple.

Is it Standard legal?

Partly. The three Pokémon ex and the Pawniard line are promo cards with the H mark and are still Standard legal; most of the other Pokémon and Trainers are G-mark cards that rotated in April 2026. That only matters if you take a deck to a League event; for learning at home it makes no difference.

Every upgrade card below carries an H, I or J regulation mark, the marks legal in Standard since the April 10, 2026 rotation, checked against our Pokémon card catalog on October 10, 2026. Basic Energy is always legal. See which cards are legal in each format for how regulation marks and reprints decide it.

Upgrade path 1: Give one deck real Trainer cards

Once both players know the rules, pick a favorite deck and swap its teaching Trainers for the ones real decks use. Lillie's Determination replaces Nemona as the draw Supporter, Ultra Ball replaces Great Ball, and Rare Candy lets the Darkrai deck's Kingambit and the Armarouge deck's Skeledirge skip their middle stage. Boss's Orders is the first card most new players are surprised by: it pulls up any of your opponent's Benched Pokémon.

This keeps the deck's Pokémon and teaches the Trainer cards one at a time, which is a gentler step than buying a competitive deck outright.

What comes out: Potion, Picnicker and two Great Ball from the deck you are upgrading.

Upgrade path 2: Graduate to a League Battle Deck

The next step after Battle Academy is a League Battle Deck, which is a copy of a real tournament deck. The Mega Lucario ex League Battle Deck is the easiest one to move to: every card is Standard legal, the plan is to attack with one Stage 1 Pokémon, and its guide covers how to upgrade it from there.
