What's in the box

These are the cards that decide how the deck plays. Each one links to its card page, with its current price.

How it plays

Charizard ex's Infernal Reign Ability triggers when you evolve into it: search your deck for up to 3 Basic Fire Energy and attach them however you like. That makes Charizard ready to attack the turn it arrives, and its Burning Darkness does 180 damage plus 30 for each Prize card your opponent has taken, so it gets stronger as you fall behind.

Pidgeot ex is the engine. Its Quick Search Ability takes any one card from your deck each turn, so once it is on the Bench you choose your best card every turn instead of drawing it. The box has 4 Rare Candy, 4 Buddy-Buddy Poffin and 3 Moltres to get both Stage 2 Pokémon out early, and Prime Catcher as its ACE SPEC.

It is a forgiving deck: the decisions are which Stage 2 to make first and which Pokémon to Knock Out, and Pidgeot finds whatever piece is missing.

Is it Standard legal?

Not as printed. Charizard ex, Pidgeot ex and their evolution lines, Moltres, Iono, Arven, Professor's Research, Artazon, Super Rod, Technical Machine: Evolution and Defiance Band all carry the G mark and rotated on April 10, 2026. Buddy-Buddy Poffin, Prime Catcher, Rare Candy, Ultra Ball, Switch and Boss's Orders are still legal. The deck still plays in Expanded and against other precons.

Every upgrade card below carries an H, I or J regulation mark, the marks legal in Standard since the April 10, 2026 rotation, checked against our Pokémon card catalog on October 10, 2026. Basic Energy is always legal. See which cards are legal in each format for how regulation marks and reprints decide it.

Upgrade path 1: Keep it as is, and tune it

The simplest path keeps Charizard ex and Pidgeot ex and plays the deck in Expanded, at a League that runs Expanded, or against friends. The list is already a competitive build; the only cards to touch are the ones that rarely do anything. A Night Stretcher gets back a Knocked Out Charizard or a Fire Energy, and a second Boss's Orders gives you more control over which Pokémon you Knock Out.

Fezandipiti ex fits any version: when one of your Pokémon is Knocked Out, it draws 3, and Burning Darkness is already rewarding you for falling behind.

What comes out: One Moltres, one Technical Machine: Evolution and Defiance Band.

Upgrade path 2: Rebuild it around Mega Charizard for Standard

If you want Charizard in Standard, the current cards are the two Mega Evolutions. Mega Charizard X ex's Inferno X discards any amount of Fire Energy from your Pokémon for 90 damage each. Mega Charizard Y ex's Explosion Y discards 3 Energy from itself to do 280 damage to any one of your opponent's Pokémon. Both give up 3 Prize cards, so a deck built around them wants to Knock Out a Pokémon every turn.

You keep the Rare Candy, Ultra Ball, Buddy-Buddy Poffin, Boss's Orders and Prime Catcher from the box. The draw and search come from current cards: Lillie's Determination and Dawn. Mega Signal finds a Mega Evolution Pokémon ex directly.

What comes out: Everything with a G mark: the Charizard ex and Pidgeot ex lines, Moltres, Iono, Arven, Professor's Research, Artazon and the Tools.
