Greninja ex Battle Deck Upgrade Guide

One Greninja ex that snipes for 40 anywhere, then hits damaged Pokémon for 240.

Three cards from the Greninja ex Battle Deck fanned out: Frogadier, Quaquaval, and Greninja ex in front.

Quick verdict

Power 2/5 · Casual
Difficulty 2/5 · Easy

Greninja ex's two attacks work well together, but a Stage 2 with no Rare Candy is slow.

What's in the box

These are the cards that decide how the deck plays. Each one links to its card page, with its current price.

How it plays

Greninja ex's Stealthy Shuriken costs one Energy of any type and does 40 damage to any of your opponent's Pokémon. Torrential Slash does 120, or 240 if the Active Pokémon already has damage counters on it. So the plan is to chip a Pokémon with Shuriken (or with Quaquaval and Wugtrio), then finish it with Torrential Slash.

Greninja ex is a Stage 2 and the deck has only one copy and no Rare Candy, so many games are decided by how quickly Froakie becomes Greninja.

Is it Standard legal?

No. Its Pokémon ex and nearly every other card carry the G mark and rotated on April 10, 2026. It still plays against other precons and in Expanded, which is where these decks were always strongest anyway.

Every upgrade card below carries an H, I or J regulation mark, the marks legal in Standard since the April 10, 2026 rotation, checked against our Pokémon card catalog on October 10, 2026. Basic Energy is always legal. See which cards are legal in each format for how regulation marks and reprints decide it.

Upgrade path 1: Swap in real Trainer cards

The Greninja ex Battle Deck was built to teach, so its Trainers are the gentle ones: Nemona, Youngster, Great Ball and Potion. Replacing them is the cheapest upgrade in the Pokémon TCG, since every card below is a common or uncommon, and it makes the deck faster against other precons whatever format you play. Lillie's Determination shuffles your hand away and draws 6 (8 before you take a Prize), Ultra Ball finds any Pokémon, Night Stretcher gets back a Knocked Out Pokémon or a Basic Energy, and Boss's Orders lets you choose which Pokémon you Knock Out.

For this deck add Rare Candy, which lets Froakie become Greninja ex on your second turn instead of your third.

What comes out: 2 Youngster, 2 Jacq, 2 Delibird and 2 Lapras.

Upgrade path 2: Move up to Mega Greninja

The Standard successor is Mega Greninja ex, which does the same job better: its Mortal Shuriken Ability places 6 damage counters on any Pokémon without attacking, and Ninja Spinner does up to 200. The Mega Greninja ex League Battle Deck is the easiest way to get a full set; it has its own guide.
