War Tax

Enchantment MV 3

Tracked across real Commander games played through TurnZero HQ.

What it does

X: This turn, creatures can't attack unless their controller pays X for each attacking creature they control.

Rulings

3 official rulings, in the order Wizards published them.

  • 2004-10-04

You can choose X=0. This doesn’t have an effect most of the time, but it does mean that creatures can’t attack unless the controller chooses to pay the cost (a cost of zero is not automatically paid, so the controller can choose to not pay).

  • 2004-10-04

The ability only applies to attackers declared after it resolves. It will not add costs to any attackers already announced.

  • 2007-02-01

In the Two-Headed Giant format, you still only have to pay once per creature.

Rulings are Wizards of the Coast's own, mirrored from Scryfall and refreshed nightly.

Every version of War Tax

1 printing, newest first. Prices are the market figures Scryfall publishes, refreshed nightly. A printing with no figure shows a dash rather than a zero, because Scryfall publishes none for some of them.

Prices from Scryfall, which tracks the TCGplayer and Cardmarket markets. They move daily and are a guide rather than a quote. Search TCGplayer for War Tax. It runs a name search across every version, which covers the printings TCGplayer publishes no direct link to.

Aggregated from Commander games tracked in TurnZero HQ. Every figure counts decks and games only. No individual deck list, player or playgroup is identified. Win rates are withheld below 5 completed games, where the sample is too small to mean anything.
